The Texas Rangers have traded pitcher Domingo Pena to the Kansas City Royals for international slot bonus money, according to John Blake on Twitter. Pena, who turns 20 in April, is not someone who generally is on anyone's prospect list, and has mostly pitched in the Dominican Summer League in his career.
This move would seem to be getting made in anticipation of the Rangers signing Cuban free agent center fielder Julio Pablo Martinez. Martinez has been declared eligible to sign by MLB, and will be able to sign with a team as of next week. Because he is under 25, he is subject to the J-2 bonus pool limitations. Texas currently has the most money available to spend in the current international signing period, and has been identified as a favorite for Martinez.
