Nick Gardewine up, Chris Martin to the d.l.

The Rangers have placed reliever Chris Martin on the disabled list, and have recalled reliever Nick Gardewine

Oakland Athletics v Texas Rangers

Texas Rangers transactions: Chris Martin, Texas Rangers relief pitcher, has been placed on the disabled list, the Rangers announced today. Taking his place on the active roster is relief pitcher Nick Gardewine, who was recalled from AAA Round Rock.

Martin was removed from Monday’s game with forearm cramps, and the team was initially optimistic he could avoid a stint on the d.l. However, after yesterday’s 12 inning affair, with the bullpen needing fresh arms, the Rangers had to get a warm body for the pen up, and so Gardewine is back in the majors.

Martin will hopefully be out just the minimum ten days, as he’s generally been solid out of the pen this year (though his numbers are skewed by a couple of particularly bad outings). Gardewine will most likely be a mopup guy for the next week or so.

Matt Bush could have been recalled, despite being in the minors less than 10 days, since Martin was placed on the disabled list. Bush, however, threw 32 pitches yesterday for Round Rock, and blew a save, so he wouldn’t be available to go today anyway.
