The Rangers tried really hard to help Bartolo Colon win his 243rd career game, which would have drawn him even with Juan Marichal for most ever by a Dominican born hurler. Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Yankees kept rudely hitting dingers off Big Bart every time the offense tried to get the squad back in the game.
Despite bombs from Joey Gallo, Ronald Guzman and, yes, even Rougned Odor, the Rangers were outdone with Aaron Judge, Neil Walker, and Gleyber Torres (twice) taking Colon deep during his 5 1⁄3 innings. The Yankees tacked on four more runs after Colon vacated, including another blast, this time coming off the bat of Aaron Hicks, to ensure Colon couldn’t wiggle off the hook.
Colon will have to wait for his next start to go for 243 once again. After that, Colon can set his sights on El Presidente Dennis Martinez’s all-time record for native Latin pitchers with 245 wins.
Player of the Game: Rafael Palmeiro hit a home run for the Cleburne Railroaders of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball tonight!
Up Next: The Rangers and Yankees will play the second game of this series with Cole Hamels set to face RHP New York’s Domingo German. First pitch from The Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 pm CT.
