Dereck Rodriguez, son of Texas Rangers Hall of Famer Pudge Rodriguez and pitcher in the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system, is getting called up by the Giants today, per reports. Dereck was a sixth round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2011, originally was an outfielder, but converted to pitching in 2013. He signed with the Giants as a free agent this past offseason.
Rodriguez, who turns 26 next week, has a 3.40 ERA in 9 starts for Sacramento, the Giants’ AAA affiliate, this season, with 53 Ks, 11 walks and 11 home runs allowed in 50.1 IP.
Pudge wasn’t in the starting lineup for the Rangers the day Dereck was born, but he appeared as a pinch hitter, as you can see from the box score.
I’m sure this is exciting news for Pudge, who is currently with the Rangers front office as a special assistant to the general manager. Congrats to him on seeing his son make it to the big leagues.
