Late night west coast games seem to make for the weirdest baseball. Tonight the Rangers trailed the Mariners 3-1 and then 4-2 before either starters Austin Bibens-Dirkx or Felix Hernandez really had a chance to settle in.
Once both starters were out of the game the Rangers scored the next three runs, all in the sixth inning, via the following sequence:
- Fan interference double
- Single
- Walk
- Wild pitch (run one)
- Passed ball (run two)
- Strikeout (out one)
- Single (run three)
- Hit by pitch
- Hit by pitch that was reversed via repay and became a strikeout (out two)
- Walk
- Strikeout (out three)
The Mariners would go on to tie the game in the eighth mostly because the Mariners have been doing their best 2016 Rangers impression this season — 16-8 in one run games with plus five wins on their expected win/loss record.
It’s not a spot-on impression however because the 2016 Rangers definitely would have finished the comeback and won this game. The 2018 Mariners did not.
Player of the Game: Condor Guzman went 4-for-4 with a walk to reach in each of his plate appearances tonight. The four hits were a career high and he also matched Rougned Odor in driving in a team-high three runs.
Up Next: Matt Moore returns for the Rangers to face LHP James Paxton for the Mariners. First pitch from Safeco is scheduled for 9:10 pm CT.
