Texas Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos has been suspended for one game for his participation in an altercation with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp Wednesday that led to a benches-clearing incident. Jose Trevino has been called up to be the backup catcher tonight with Chirinos out. To make room on the active roster for Trevino, the Rangers have placed relief pitcher Chris Martin on the disabled list retroactive to Tuesday with a calf strain suffered when he was running to the field from the bullpen in the fracas.
Trevino will likely be sent back down tomorrow, but it’s still neat for the 2014 6th round pick to officially be a major leaguer, even if just for a day. Trevino, in his second season at Frisco, is considered a very good defensive catcher, but needs to make progress with his bat.
Trevino will presumably be replaced on the active roster tomorrow by a pitcher, who would be taking Martin’s old roster spot. Who that is depends on what the Rangers are going to do to fill the open rotation spot that is due up sometime between Sunday and Tuesday, depending on whether they choose to give Cole Hamels and Bartolo Colon extra rest or keep them on four days rest.
