Ronald Guzman to 7 day d.l., Ryan Rua recalled

Texas Rangers transactions: Ronald Guzman has been placed on the 7 day disabled list with a concussion, the Rangers announced today. Ryan Rua has been recalled from AAA Round Rock to replace him on the active roster.

This was a move we discussed earlier today as being likely, between Nomar Mazara and Joey Gallo also dealing with hamstring issues and Adrian Beltre being limited. With the three man bench and several achy players, Guzman’s likely unavailability for the next game or two put the Rangers in a position of being dangerously low on bench depth, and so Ryan Rua is back up to give the Rangers some additional options off the bench.

It was announced yesterday that Guzman was in the MLB concussion protocol, and thus is eligible to be on the 7 day concussion disabled list, rather than the normal 10 day disabled list. With two off days coming up, if Guzman is on the d.l. the minimum 7 days, he would miss just five games. While I imagine there is a certain amount of disappointment that it is Rua coming up, rather than Willie Calhoun, if the Rangers are looking for someone to provide depth for the next week before going back to Round Rock, bringing up Rua rather than Calhoun makes sense.
