Cole Hamels is being traded to the Chicago Cubs, according to Evan Grant on Twitter. Evan says the Texas Rangers lefthander is the subject of a deal that “is in place” between the Cubs and the Rangers. Jeff Passan is also reporting a deal is done.
There is no word as of yet on what the return would be, but A-ball righthander Rollie Lacy has been scratched from his scheduled start with the Cubs’ affiliate, and D.J. Wilson, a toolsy outfielder in A ball, has been activated from the disabled list and is not in the lineup, leading to speculation that those two are in the deal.
The Rangers had supposedly been talking to the Cubs, the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies today, with a deal apparently coming together quickly. Previous reports indicated that the Rangers would absorb all but $4 million of the money due to Hamels for 2018 and the buyout on his 2019 team option.
