Chris Martin to the disabled list, Ricky Rodriguez recalled

The Rangers have recalled righthanded reliever Ricky Rodriguez to replace Chris Martin, who has been placed on the d.l.

Texas Rangers transactions: The Texas Rangers have placed pitcher Chris Martin on the 10 day disabled list, the Rangers announced today. Taking Martin’s place on the active roster is righthanded reliever Ricky Rodriguez, who has been recalled from AAA Round Rock.

Martin has had an adventurous couple of days, as he was optioned on Tuesday to make room to activate Ronald Guzman from the disabled list (a move that was apparently unpopular with his bullpen mates, as Martin has pitched well this year and didn’t deserve to be sent down), and then was recalled yesterday when Tony Barnette went on the disabled list with a strained lat. Martin pitched last night, gave up the winning run in the 10th, and at one point had the trainer come out and check on him, though he stayed in the game.

Apparently, however, Martin strained his groin, and he is now joining Barnette on the disabled list.

We wrote about Rodriguez this morning, in anticipation of him being called up at some point in the coming days to replace a position player and get the bullpen back to eight pitchers. With Martin joining Barnette and Matt Bush on the disabled list, the Rangers will likely have to turn to Brandon Mann if they wish to go to eight relievers again, or else move someone like Austin Bibens-Dirkx to the bullpen when Martin Perez is activated from his rehab assignment.
