The Texas Rangers acquired Austin Jackson, Jason Bahr and Cory Gearrin from the San Francisco Giants yesterday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. As we discussed in the aftermath of the deal, this is primarily a salary dump by the Giants, who were very close to the luxury tax line — by clearing out the salary of Jackson, who is in the first year of a 2 year, $6 million deal, and Gearrin, who is making $1.68 million on a one year deal, the Giants are better positioned to add salary at the deadline without crossing over the luxury tax line.
For the Rangers, this is an opportunity to buy a decent pitching prospect in Bahr for the price of absorbing the bad Austin Jackson contract, and also pick up an extra reliever from the Giants who has not performed well this year. The Rangers have told Jackson not to report yet, and are apparently looking to move him in a separate deal — if they can’t find someone who will take him, even with the Rangers eating the money due to him, it sounds like they will likely release Jackson. There’s no indication yet about the player to be named later, but it doesn’t sound like it is anticipated to be anyone of significance.
