Texas Rangers pitcher Doug Fister, who has been on the disabled list since early June with a knee injury, will not return this season, it was revealed yesterday. Fister, 34, had a 4.50 ERA and a 5.25 FIP in 66 innings over 12 starts for the Rangers this year.
Fister was the first free agent to sign this offseason, and got a $3.5 million deal for 2018, with a $4.5 million option for 2019 that carries a $500,000 buyout. The option is cheap enough that it was thought the option could be exercised, particularly if he returned in September and pitched decently. But with word coming out that his knee is not responding as hoped, it seems unlikely the Rangers will exercise the option.
