Texas Rangers transactions: Nomar Mazara has been activated from the 10 day disabled list, the Rangers announced today. To make room for Mazara, the Rangers have optioned Willie Calhoun to AAA Round Rock.
I think this was the move that we expected the team to make to clear a spot for Mazara — with Nomar back, he will be playing right field most of the time, Joey Gallo will be in left field, Shin-Soo Choo will be at DH, and Ronald Guzman will be at first base. Jurickson Profar is also getting time at first base, and Adrian Beltre is DHing a fair amount. That means that there isn’t really a spot to get Calhoun regular at bats right now, so he goes back to AAA to play every day for the time being. Calhoun will likely be back when rosters expand in September, though the playing time situation won’t have changed, most likely, so Jeff Banister will have to decide then how to juggle playing time.
Speaking of Beltre, he is not in the lineup today, after injuring his hamstring on Monday, but he’s also not been placed on the disabled list at this point. That could change — the Rangers may be waiting to evaluate him and see how it is responding before making a move — but for now, Beltre is still active. If the Rangers opt to put him on the disabled list, I would expect Drew Robinson to be called up to give the Rangers someone on the bench with some defensive versatility who can play the infield and outfield.
