Yu Darvish, the former Texas Rangers ace who is now a member of the Chicago Cubs, will miss the rest of the season after an MRI revealed as a stress reaction in his elbow and a triceps strain. Darvish removed himself from a rehab start this weekend after feeling pain, and requested an MRI.

It’s a sad ending to what has been a disappointing season for Darvish, who signed with the Cubs this past offseason as a free agent. Darvish ends the year with a 4.95 ERA over 40 innings in 8 starts.

Though Darvish just turned 32, he logged an extremely heavy workload in Japan in his early 20s, and concerns about the mileage on his arm seemed to have factored into certain teams being less aggressive in pursuing Darvish this offseason. Darvish is receiving $25 million this season and $20 million for 2019. If he does not exercise his opt out after 2019, he is guaranteed $81 million from 2020-23.
