Oakland A’s starting pitcher Sean Manaea is expected to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, the team announced today. The expectation is that the 26 year old Manaea will also miss the entirety of the 2019 season.
This is a huge blow for the A’s, who are a surprise playoff contender, due in no small part to Manaea. The lefty has had a breakout season for Oakland, posting a 3.59 ERA in 27 starts.
‘The A’s have been particularly stricken with pitching injuries this year. Stud pitching prospects A.J. Puk and Jharel Cotton had Tommy John surgery this spring, and Kendall Graveman and Daniel Gossett have had TJS during the year. Paul Blackburn and Andrew Triggs are also on the 60 day d.l., while Brett Anderson has also landed on the disabled list with an uncertain return date.
