Texas Rangers transactions: Shawn Kelley has officially signed a one year contract with the Texas Rangers, the team announced today. To make room on the 40 man roster for Kelley, the Rangers have designated outfielder John Andreoli for assignment.
Reports came out yesterday that Kelley, a righthanded reliever with a track record of success (other than in 2017), had agreed to a deal with Texas. Reports indicate it is a $2.5 million deal for 2019, with Texas holding a club option for 2020 at $2.5 million with a $250,000 buyout. It’s a reasonable deal for a guy who profiles as a useful bullpen piece, and if he does have success, Texas can bring him back cheaply for 2020.
As for Andreoli, he was claimed on waivers earlier this month, and with the 40 man roster full, it was clear that either he or Luke Farrell would be the odd man out. As it is, Texas seems likely to sign another reliever at some point in the coming weeks, at which point Farrell would hit the waiver wire.
