MLB Rumors: Jayce Tingler, Texas Rangers coach, is the new San Diego Padres manager, according to Jeff Passan on Twitter. Tingler and Ron Washington, the former Texas Rangers manager and current Atlanta Braves coach, were the two finalists, per earlier reports.
Congratulations are in order for Tingler, who interviewed for the Rangers manager job last year prior to Chris Woodward being hired. Tingler has been in the Rangers’ organization since the 2005-06 offseason, when he was selected in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Tingler played in the minors in the Rangers system in 2006, and then started coaching in 2007 for the Rangers. He’s had a variety of roles in the minors and with the big league team, as well as in the front office, since then, and in 2019 was the Major League Player Development Field Coordinator for Texas.
San Diego general manager A.J. Preller, of course, was in the Rangers’ front office during this time until he left to join San Diego after the 2014 season.
This is a blow to the Rangers, as Tingler was a valuable member of their organization, but is a great opportunity for someone who is extremely well respected. Best of luck to him.
