Texas Rangers transactions: C.D. Pelham, designated for assignment last week by the Rangers, has been claimed on waivers by the Chicago Cubs, it was announced today. In addition, Taylor Guerrieri cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to AAA Nashville.
Pelham, 24, is a big lefty reliever who was a 33rd round pick of the Rangers in 2015. He shot up from A ball to the majors in 2018, but had a disastrous 2019 where he was completely unable to throw strikes and saw his velocity back up. He was a 40 man roster casualty when the Rangers needed to add players in advance of the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs will now see if they can get him back on track.
Guerrieri, it appears, signed a deal that provided for him to stay with the Rangers for 2020 on a minor league deal if he cleared waivers. The former first round pick for the Rays was signed to a minor league deal last offseason, and got some time in a middle relief role in 2019 in the majors. He presumably gets a major league invite to camp and will likely be AAA bullpen depth.
