Maldonado to the Astros: 2 years, $7M

The Houston Astros and Martin Maldonado have reportedly agreed to terms on a two year deal

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Martin Maldonado and the Houston Astros have agreed to terms on a two year, $7 million free agent contract, per reports.

Maldonado, a 33 year old catcher, was acquired by the Houston Astros at the trade deadline in both 2018 (from the Anaheim Angels) and in 2019 (from the Chicago Cubs, who had previously acquired him from the Kansas City Royals).

Maldonado was discussed as a possible target for the Texas Rangers this offseason. He doesn’t hit much — he has a career .219/.289/.355 slash line in the majors — but he’s considered a quality defender and game caller, and he could have taken over the lion’s share of the catching duties for Texas, allowing Jeff Mathis to be limited to 60 or so starts, which would be a more workable workload for him.
