MLB Rumors: Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals have agreed to a 7 year, $245M deal, according to Jeff Passan on Twitter. Strasburg had opted out of a 7 year, $125M deal with the Nationals to explore the free agent market.
Strasburg is theoretically getting $35M per year on this deal, but Washington is well known for deferring significant amounts in their larger contracts, and I would expect that a significant portion of this deal is deferred, lowering the total value and the average annual value.
Strasburg’s departure from the market makes Gerrit Cole now the best pitcher available in free agency by a significant margin.
