FanGraphs added pitch framing to their database, and it’s bejng included in Steamer forecasts. In the case of Jeff Mathis, he’s projected to be the second best catcher in terms of runs saved per game by fooling umpires in to calling more strikes. That’s pretty cool! The result is only about 22 runs saved for 120 games, which honestly pretty solid when taken apart from hitting and other defense, though not necessarily solid enough to make me like Jeff Mathis. While we’re at it, Isiah Kiner-Falefa is forecasted to be the worst framer in the game, at about -25 runs per 120 games. In all, adding pitch framing to the Steamer projections added about a win to the Texas forecast.
