Texas Rangers set Opening Day roster, DFA Connor Sadzeck

The Rangers have purchased the contracts of three players on minor league deals and designated Connor Sadzeck for assignment

Texas Rangers transactions: Connor Sadzeck has been designated for assignment, Jeanmar Gomez, Logan Forsythe, and Hunter Pence have had their contracts purchased, Zack Granite has been optioned to Nashville, Adrian Sampson has been assigned to Nashville, Yohander Mendez has been placed on the 10 day injured list, and Luke Farrell has been placed on the 60 day injured list, as the Rangers make their final moves to set their Opening Day roster. With these moves, the 40 man roster is full.

These moves mean that Kyle Bird has claimed the final roster spot, giving us the following 25 man roster to start the season:

Rotation — Mike Minor, Edinson Volquez, Lance Lynn, Drew Smyly, Shelby Miller

Bullpen — Jose Leclerc, Chris Martin, Jesse Chavez, Shawn Kelley, Jeanmar Gomez, Kyle Dowdy, Jeffrey Springs, Kyle Bird

Catchers — Jeff Mathis, Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Infielders — Ronald Guzman, Rougned Odor, Elvis Andrus, Asdrubel Cabrera, Logan Forsythe

Outfielders — Joey Gallo, Delino DeShields, Nomar Mazara, Shin-Soo Choo, Hunter Pence

Sampson will go to Nashville and be in the rotation, and will likely be one of the first pitchers turned to if the team needs someone to fill in in the major league rotation.

Mendez is on the 10 day injured list, but since he will not be available until the second half of the season, he will presumably move to the 60 day injured list when the team needs a 40 man roster spot.

Sadzeck must be traded, waived or released in the next seven days. Presumably, the Rangers will be putting him on waivers, betting that a team won’t disrupt its Opening Day roster just a couple of days in in order to claim him and add him to the active roster. If Sadzeck clears waivers, he will presumably be outrighted to Nashville.
