Texas Rangers pitcher Luke Farrell likely needs surgery, according to Jared Sandler on Twitter, who says that the team still has to wait for a few days for the swelling to subside. Farrell was diagnosed with a non-displaced jaw fracture after being struck by a line drive while he was pitching in the 9th inning of Saturday’s game.
Farrell, 27, was claimed on waivers from the Angels in January, after having been claimed on waivers by the Angels from the Cubs in September. The righthander, who is the son of former manager John Farrell, has an option remaining, and appeared to be slated as a AAA depth guy for the 2019 season.
Assuming Farrell is going to be sidelined for a few weeks after surgery, he would seem to be a candidate for the 60 day injured list, which would potentially open up a 40 man roster spot, should the Rangers need to add someone on a minor league deal to the 40 man roster, such as Matt Davidson or Hunter Pence. If he were placed on the 60 day injured list, he would not be eligible to be activated until late May.
