The Texas Rangers have placed lefthanded pitcher Drew Smyly on the injured list with nerve irritation in his left arm. To take his place on the active roster, the Rangers have called up righthanded reliever Wei-Chieh Huang.
This is troubling news on Smyly, who was scheduled to start tomorrow. We shall see if the Rangers have someone replace Huang tomorrow and make the start, or if the Rangers decide to do a bullpen game — Huang, Kyle Dowdy, Jesse Chavez, Jeffrey Springs and Brett Martin can all go multiple innings, so that is a possibility,
Huang came to Texas last year in the Jake Diekman trade. He’s got a decent slider, though his best pitch is a changeup. He has never pitched in the majors before, and has a 1.86 ERA for Frisco currently, with 14 Ks and 2 walks in 9.2 IP.
UPDATE — Per Evan Grant on Twitter, Smyly is expected to only miss one or two starts.
