MLB Rumors: the San Francisco Giants are seeking out an outfielder, per Ken Rosenthal, who says the team is in “active trade discussions” with multiple teams. Shin-Soo Choo as the subject of trade rumors between the Giants and the Texas Rangers this spring, you may recall, according to a late March Rosenthal article.
The Giants are currently 11-14, and their regular outfield of Gerardo Parra, Kevin Pillar and Steven Duggar has been abysmal offensively. Choo is limited with the glove, but isn’t so bad that he is unplayable in the outfield, particularly when he’s hitting like he is currently — he has a 932 OPS this year.
Choo is under contract for $21 million in 2019 and $21 million in 2020, and has a full no trade clause by virtue of his 10/5 rights. He’s been productive and the Rangers value his leadership, but he’s also a DH for a team that would like to get Willie Calhoun into the majors. Texas would have to eat money in any Choo deal, with the question being how much — Texas could possibly get a prospect or player back, but any trade would be motivated by saving money and opening up the DH spot.
I have no idea if San Francisco has any interest at this point in Choo, but it is something to watch.
