Texas Rangers transactions: Ronald Guzman has been placed on the 10 day injured list with a strained hamstring, the team announced today. To take his place on the active roster, Patrick Wisdom has been recalled from AAA Nashville.
Guzman strained his hamstring in the third inning of yesterdays game while running to second base on a double, and was replaced by Logan Forsythe. It appears that Forsythe, the team’s primary backup infielder, will be getting the playing time at first base for the near term, with Wisdom, a righthanded hitting corner infielder, assuming a bench role.
The Ranges have off days on Monday and Thursday, and play in Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday, where there is no DH. Chris Woodward will have to decide how to allocate the playing time with no DH against the Diamondbacks, and whether to put Joey Gallo at first base for one of those games. The team has been reluctant to move Gallo between the infield and the outfield, and if Guzman is going to miss only a few games (he’s eligible to return next Wednesday), that makes sense. If Guzman is going to miss extended time, however, I’m not sure it doesn’t make more sense to have Gallo cover first base in his absence.
UPDATE — Initial word is Guzman is expected back in 3-4 weeks.
