The Hickory Crawdads had a 10:30 a.m. EDT start this morning, and those who made it out for the matinee saw Yerry Rodriguez continue to miss bats for the ‘dads.
Yerry went 5 innings today, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks and 8 Ks, throwing 62 of his 94 pithces for strikes. The 21 year old righthander now has a 1.74 ERA on the season, with 44 Ks in 31 innings against 10 walks. Grant Anderson struck out 1 batter while working 2 hitless, walkless and scoreless innings for the save.
Jonathan Hernandez had one of those outings today for Frisco that underscores why many think he will end up in the bullpen. He went 5 innings and allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits, but walked 4 batters (3 unintentionally), hit a batter, and threw 2 wild pitches. Only 49 of his 89 pitches were for strikes. Hernandez has the stuff to succeed either as a starter or a reliever, but the inconsistency of command is why there seems to be a sense his major league future is in the pen.
Speaking of guys with a major league future in the pen, Emmanuel Clase faced 5 batters for Frisco tonight, retired 4 of them, including 1 on strikes, and didn’t allow a run. Per Ryan Rouillard on Twitter, Clase threw 17 fastballs tonight — 3 were 99 mph, the tigers were 100+.
Willie Calhoun had another hit today for Nashville, and he’s rocking along with a 960 OPS. Eli White, meanwhile, had his second homer of the season for the Sounds as part of a 2 hit game, and despite a recent slump is sporting a 772 OPS.
