Texas Rangers transactions: Kyle Bird has been recalled, and Jeanmar Gomez has been designated for assignment, the Texas Rangers announced today.
Bird, a lefthanded reliever who came over from Tampa in the Jurickson Profar trade, broke camp with the major league club but was sent down after five appearances. In 13.1 IP over 11 outings for Nashville, he has put up a 2.70 ERA, with 18 strikeouts against 6 walks.
Gomez being designated for assignment is not a surprise. As we discussed yesterday, Chris Woodward opting to use Kyle Dowdy instead of Gomez in a key situation, when Gomez hadn’t pitched for a week, seemed to indicate Woodward would not use Gomez unless he had no choice, The veteran right hander had an 8.22 ERA in 15.1 IP.
Texas now has 7 days to waive, trade or release Gomez. If he clears waivers, he can reject an outright assignment and become a free agent,
The 40 man roster now stands at 39.
