Texas Rangers release Jeanmar Gomez

Reliever Jeanmar Gomez, DFA’d earlier this week, has been placed on release waivers

Texas Rangers transactions: Jeanmar Gomez, the right handed relief pitcher designated for assignment by the Rangers earlier this week, has been placed on release waivers, the team announced today.

Gomez was a surprise addition to the 25 man roster out of spring training, with the Rangers keeping the veteran for what was assumed would be a middle relief role. Gomez struggles from the outset, however, and fell out of favor — at one point he went 10 days between outings, and at another point went a week. Chris Woodward had, by the end of Gomez’s tenure here, stopped using him in any sort of meaningful situation.

The Rangers had 7 days to waive, trade or release Gomez. This indicates that there was no trade interest in Gomez, and that he would either reject an outright assignment if he cleared waivers, or that the Rangers had no interest in keeping him if he did.
