  • That was ugly.
  • Adrian Sampson simply didn’t have his command tonight and was getting hammered by the Indians hitters from the outset. A Ronald Guzman error meant that 2 of the 5 runs he gave up were unearned, but it was a bad night for Sampson, who only made it 3 innings before getting the hook.
  • This is two straight bad outings for Sampson, and while his results in terms of runs allowed this year have consistently been better than what batters were doing would indicate, he has seemed like he might have figured something out and take a step forward beyond being an up-and-down guy. He’s going to have to show he can bounce back from these two unpleasant outings, though.
  • That said, Sampson has an ERA of 4.40 on the year, and I will take that.
  • Drew Smyly came on in relief and gave up 5 runs in 3.1 IP, including 3 straight home runs at one point. He now has an ERA of 8.42 on the season, and with Joe Palumbo needing a 25 man roster spot tomorrow, it seems likely Smyly will either be waived or put on the injured list. There’s simply no point in continuing to run him out there.
  • Peter Fairbanks and Brett Martin each pitched and didn’t allow any runs, which is good.
  • Rougned Odor and Willie Calhoun each homered, and Nomar Mazara had a couple of hits, but really, it was a pretty bad day for the offense, too.
  • Turn the page and let’s look forward to Palumbo tomorrow.
