Texas Rangers transactions: The Texas Rangers have recalled Joe Palumbo from AA Frisco. To clear a spot on the 25 man roster for Palumbo, the Rangers have placed Jeffrey Springs on the 10 day injured list with what is described as biceps tendinitis.
In addition, the Rangers have announced that Nick Gardewine, who was released last week, has been signed to a two year minor league deal.
Finally, Joey Gallo and Scott Heineman have both been sent to the Arizona Rookie League Rangers team to start a rehab assignment.
The promotion of Palumbo has been expected, and while I think we anticipated that a lefthanded pitcher would go on the injured list or be waived, the thought was that this would be Drew Smyly, rather than Springs. Springs last pitched on June 16, when he allowed 3 walks, 2 hits and 3 runs while not recording an out against the Reds. There’s no indication thusfar as to the seriousness of the injury, or how long he should be out.
Gardewine has struggled with injuries, and this new two year deal may be in anticipation of him missing significant time through much of the 2020 season.
As for Gallo and Heineman, Gallo could be back this weekend from his oblique strain, and appears to be on schedule. Heineman had offseason surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, started a rehab assignment, and then was pulled off.
