Seattle Mariners trade Jay Bruce to Philadelphia Phillies

The M’s have shipped out a veteran as part of what is expected to be a larger sell off

The Seattle Mariners have traded veteran outfielder Jay Bruce to the Philadelphia Phillies, along with $18 million, in exchange for minor league 4C guy Jake Scheiner, per multiple reports.

Bruce is in the second year of a 3 year, $39 million deal he signed with the New York Mets prior to 2018. Bruce disappointed in New York, and he was sent to the M’s as a salary dump as part of the Robinson Cano trade this offseason.

Bruce, like the M’s, started 2019 well, but he’s currently sporting a sub-.300 OBP to go with his .500+ slugging. With the Mariners having fallen apart after their hot start, they are apparently ready to start moving expensive veterans. In moving Bruce, they are getting a fringe guy who was a 4th round pick out of the University of Houston in 2017, and are saving around $3 million. The Phillies are expected to use Bruce as a bench bat.
