Asdrubal Cabrera suspension reduced to three games

Rangers third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera will begin serving his suspension on Tuesday

MLB: Cleveland Indians at Texas Rangers Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports

Texas Rangers third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera has had his four game suspension for arguing balls and strikes and throwing his equipment reduced on appeal to three games, it was announced today. Cabrera will serve the suspension beginning tomorrow, missing the three games in Detroit.

This was expected, and the timing of Cabrera’s suspension dovetails with Joey Gallo’s return from the injured list. Cabrera counts against the 25 man roster during his suspension, and thus, in order to maintain a 3 man bench, Kyle Bird was sent down yesterday to open up a spot for Gallo tomorrow.

The Rangers have 13 games until the All Star Break, beginning tomorrow, and once Cabrera returns, the team will have to decide if it wants to try to stick with a 7 man bullpen and a 4 man bench, at least until the break, or if it will have to send someone down or otherwise remove a position player from the active roster to add an 8th reliever. There’s no obvious choice to be removed from the active roster among the position players, and the conundrum will only become worse once Hunter Pence is ready to return.
