Frisco righthander Jonathan Hernandez is generally seen as being a reliever in the major leagues, due to his delivery not being conducive to the type of command he would need to be a starter. He has a starter’s repertoire, however, and when he is on, as he was tonight for the Roughriders, he can be dominant. This evening, Hernandez went 7 innings, struck out 9 while not walking anyone, and gave up an unearned run on 2 hits. Matt Bush pitched a shutout inning with a K, and Joe Barlow pitched a shutout inning with 2 Ks. Leody Taveras had a single (that apparently was off the wall and should have been a double, but he stumbled), and Michael De Leon had three hits.
Hickory righthander Tim Brennan is a 22 year old righthander who is a pitchability guy drafted out of St. Joe’s in 2018, and he has been solid for the Crawdads this year, but had an outing almost as good as Hernandez’s today. Brennan went 8 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and 0 walks, striking out 5. Jonathan Ornelas and Frainyer Chavez each had a pair of hits.
Down East saw some impressive performances from some bats tonight, with J.P. Martinez going 3 for 3 with a double and a walk, Curtis Terry going 2 for 4, Diosbel Arias picking up a pair of singles and a walk, and Sam Huff hitting a home run.
Meanwhile, in Arizona, Kyle Dowdy pitched an inning for the AZL Rookie Rangers. It hadn’t been announced that he was starting a rehab assignment, but apparently he has.
