David Ortiz shot, per reports

Former Boston Red Sox DH was shot today in the Dominican Republic, per reports

MLB: Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

David Ortiz has been shot, per multiple reports that indicate the former Boston Red Sox slugger was shot at an amusement center in the Dominican Republic. His father told reporters Ortiz was shot in the leg while in Santo Domingo, and has been taken for medical treatment.

The 43 year old native of Santo Domingo retired after the 2016 season, after a 20 year career with the Twins and the Red Sox.

Reports indicate that this was a robbery attempt.

This will be updated when more information is available.

UPDATE — Additional reports are now saying Ortiz was shot in the lower back, with the bullet exiting his abdomen. He reportedly told the doctor treating him, “Please do not let me die, I am a good man.” Ortiz is apparently currently in surgery.

UPDATE II — Ortiz underwent surgery last night, and had his gallbladder removed. Marly Rivera of ESPN is reporting he is out of surgery and in serious but stable condition.
