Texas Rangers transactions: Hunter Pence has been activated from the injured list today, and pitcher Taylor Guerrieri has had his contract purchased, adding him to the 25 and 40 man rosters. To make room on the 25 man roster for Pence and Guerrieri, Willie Calhoun has been optioned and Jesse Biddle has been placed on the injured list with a sore shoulder.
Who the odd man out would be when Pence returned has been the subject of much debate, and Calhoun drew the short straw. Texas appears committed to getting Pence, Nomar Mazara and Shin-Soo Choo regular playing time, which would mean limited at bats for Calhoun. You could option Nomar, or option Ronald Guzman or Delino DeShields while sitting Pence more often to get Calhoun playing time, but that isn’t going to happen, it appears.
Guerrieri is a right handed pitcher who is a former first round draft pick signed by Texas as a minor league free agent this past offseason. He has a 3.47 ERA for Nashville in 36 IP in a middle relief role, and will, I’m assuming, get a look in a similar role in the majors.
