Levi Weaver says Joey Gallo will be undergoing surgery for a broken hamate bone

MLB: Texas Rangers at Minnesota Twins David Berding-USA TODAY Sports

Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo will undergo surgery to repair a broken hamate bone, says Levi Weaver. Gallo would, assuming this is correct, be anticipated to miss the next one-two months.

This is a huge blow for the Rangers, who will be losing their best position player, and a guy who, prior to going on the injured list with an oblique injury, was having an MVP caliber season. The return from surgery to remove a hamate bone depends a good deal on pain tolerance; that said, the Rangers probably don’t want to rush Gallo back and have him potentially get into bad habits to compensate for hand pain at this point.

I would guess Gallo will be back, though maybe not until September. In the meantime, Willie Calhoun is expected to be called up today to take his place on the active roster.
