Texas Rangers starting pitcher Joe Palumbo is expected to return to the majors on August 20, when the Rangers have a doubleheader, per reports from the beat guys. Chris Woodward has indicated that Pedro Payano is expected to remain in the rotation for the time being, with Payano and Palumbo each starting a game on August 20.
Palumbo was expected to return to the major league rotation earlier this month, but an ankle issue put those plans on hold. Palumbo has made two starts for Nashville since returning to action, though with somewhat abbreviated pitch counts, and he appears likely to get one more start before coming up on the 20th.
Payano has gotten positive reviews for his recent work in the rotation, but would seem to be the odd man out if and when Palumbo comes back for good. Payano could be returned to the minors or work out of the bullpen at that point.
