The Angels have designated catcher Jonathan Lucroy for assignment, it was announced today. The former Texas Ranger will presumably be placed on waivers, since there no ability to trade him since the trade deadline has passed.
Lucroy, 33, has a 681 OPS and poor defensive metrics, resulting in a -1.0 bWAR on the season. He also had a sub-replacement bWAR with the A’s last year, though he also garnered praise for how he handled the Oakland pitching staff.
Lucroy was, of course, acquired by the Texas Rangers from the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline in 2016, along with Jeremy Jeffress, in exchange for Lewis Brinson , Luis Ortiz and Ryan Cordell. Lucroy was solid over the final two months of 2016, but disappointed both offensively and defensively in 2017 before being sent to the Colorado Rockies for Pedro Gonzalez.
