Texas Rangers transactions: Pitchers Brock Burke and Jonathan Hernandez have been recalled from AAA Nashville and AA Frisco, respectively, for tonight’s Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Anaheim Angels. To make room for them on the active roster, the Rangers have optioned pitchers Phillips Valdez and Ian Gibaut to AAA Nashville.
Burke was an expected move, as he has been slated to start a game today for a few days now. With Joe Palumbo having left Game 1 early with a blister, Gibaut and Valdez had to log a number of pitches, and in order to get a fresh arm as a long man today, the Rangers are going with Hernandez, who has been used as a multi-inning reliever in recent weeks at Frisco.
Someone will have to be sent down at the end of Game 2, since the Rangers brought up a 26th man for the doubleheader. It remains to be seen whether it would be Burke, Palumbo, Hernandez, or someone else.
UPDATE — Palumbo is being sent back to AAA Nashville and is being placed on the 7 day minor league injured list with the blister issue.
