MLB Rumors: Asdrubal Cabrera has signed with the Washington Nationals, according to multiple reports. The infielder is reportedly getting a major league deal, which will necessitate the Nationals adding him to their 25 and 40 man rosters.

Cabrera was placed on release waivers over the weekend and went unclaimed, making him a free agent. The Nationals, who are in the Wild Card hunt int he National League, currently have Adrian Sanchez as a utility infielder. Cabrera, who had a stint with the Nationals in 2014, would seem to represent an upgrade there.

Cabrera slashed .235/.318/.393 in 368 plate appearances for the Rangers as their regular third baseman prior to being designated for assignment on Friday. He was on a one year deal, and cutting Cabrera loose allows the Rangers to give more playing time to younger players. Cabrera was owed $3.5 million for the full 2019 season for the Rangers, meaning he has about $1.1 million still due to him from the Rangers. The Nationals will be signing him for the league minimum, which means that, if he stays on the roster the rest of the way, they will be paying him around $200,000, meaning the Rangers would still be on the hook for around $900,000.
