The Down East Wood Ducks had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the 9th today, but fell short in the deciding Game Five of their best of five semi-finals series against Fayetteville, getting knocked out of the playoffs by today’s 6-3 loss.
A four run seventh inning, with Scott Engler getting tagged for four runs while not retiring a batter, ended up being the difference. Down East had just three hits all day — ome apiece by Sam Huff, Sherten Apostel and Yohel Pozo — but drew 8 walks. A pair of walks and then a two out E3 brought Apostel, who homered twice yesterday, to the plate as the winning run, but he struck out looking to end the game and the series.
Despite the unfortunate ending, the Wood Ducks had a terrific season, with two of the organization’s top position prospects, Sam Huff and Sherten Apostel, ending the season there. Congrats to the DEWDs for an outstanding year.
