Seven members of the Texas Rangers are no longer members of the Texas Rangers as of today, as the free agent period has begun and those seven players are officially free agents.
Shin-Soo Choo, Juan Nicasio, Jeff Mathis, Derek Dietrich, Jesse Chavez, Edinson Volquez, and Andrew Romine are all off the 40 man roster and free agents. The Rangers will not be making qualifying offers to any of them. Well, that isn’t official, and in a very theoretical way its possible they could be made a qualifying offer, but realistically that isn’t happening.
The Rangers have a club option on Corey Kluber for 2021, but all indications are that that option will not be exercised.
By my count, there are 38 players on the 40 man roster, including the players on the 60 day injured list who will be getting activated imminently. I expect in the next few days we will see players being designated for assignment as the Rangers clear out some additional spots on the 40 man roster.
