Righthanded pitcher Ryan Garcia, the Texas Rangers’ second round pick out of UCLA in 2019, underwent Tommy John surgery in March, per Evan Grant.

This is the first that this has been mentioned, I believe. Given what all was going on in March, both in the world in general and in baseball in particular, this wouldn’t have necessarily been on anyone’s radar at the time anyway.

Garcia was a small, high spin rate pitcher who was a late riser around draft time in 2019. Garcia joins Owen White and Alex Speas as Rangers second rounders the last few years who have needed Tommy John surgery. Speas spent thIs summer at the Rangers’ Alternative Training Site, while White is part of the Instructional League roster, along with fellow 2018 draftee Mason Englert, who also had Tommy John surgery last year.

Garcia should presumably be back on the mound in game action around May or June, 2021. As an advanced college arm, I’d expect the goal to be to have him pitching for Down East by season’s end.
