With the offseason kicking into gear, we are going to run a series of polls asking about what you think the Texas Rangers should do in regards to various players on the free agent market. We have used Jon Heyman’s predictions in the past, but since he hasn’t been doing them lately, we will use the Fangraphs predictions instead, along with the predictions from Kiley McDaniel at ESPN.
Today, we are looking at DH Nelson Cruz.
We all know the Nelson Cruz story...had several really good years with the Rangers, was allowed to walk after the 2013 season that saw him suspended for PEDs. Went to Baltimore, was great, then went to the Seattle Mariners on a deal widely mocked as being a dramatic overpay, only to have the best seasons of his career for the M’s. Cruz has spent the last two years mashing for the Minnesota Twins, putting up a .308/.394/.626 slash line in 173 games.
Cruz turns 41 in July — he is older than Hank Blalock, among others — but he continues to mash. His career path is pretty much sui generis in MLB history.
Fangraphs projects Cruz at 1 year, $12 million. McDaniel has 2 years, $40 million. I’m going with 2 years while splitting the difference on the AAV.
At 2 years, $32 million, would you want the Rangers to sign Nelson Cruz?
