With the offseason kicking into gear, we are going to run a series of polls asking about what you think the Texas Rangers should do in regards to various players on the free agent market. We have used Jon Heyman’s predictions in the past, but since he hasn’t been doing them lately, we will use the Fangraphs predictions instead, along with the predictions from Kiley McDaniel at ESPN.
Today, we are looking at catcher J.T. Realmuto of the Philadelphia Phillies. Realmuto is generally considered to be one of the top two or three free agents in this class, and both Fangraphs and McDaniel have him as the #1 player on the board. Realmuto put up 1.2 bWAR in 47 games in 2020, after having come in at 4 and a half bWAR each of the previous three years. The Phillies acquired Realmuto from the Miami Marlins for Jorge Alfaro, Sixto Sanchez, Will Stewart and international bonus money right before spring training began in 2019, when they were expected to be pushing for playoff contention.
Realmuto received a qualifying offer, which he is rejecting. McDaniel projects 5 years, $110 million for Realmuto, which is identical to the median crowdsource projection at Fangraphs. Craig Edwards at Fangraphs has 6 years, $140 million, but that feels a little high to me, and given the median projection and McDaniel’s projection are identical, I will use that for our poll.
At 5 years, $110 million, and the loss of a draft pick, would you want the Rangers to sign J.T. Realmuto?
