Keith Law’s top 100 MLB prospect list for 2020 is out at his new home at the Athletic, and the list includes a pair of Texas Rangers prospects.
Center fielder Leody Taveras has become a somewhat polarizing prospect in recent years, with those who are high on him praising his defense in center field and feeling that his bat will improve as he gets older (he’s only 21), while those who are (relatively) down on him feeling that his lack of offensive progress indicates a guy who tops out as a fourth outfielder.
Law appears to be a Leody believer, though, as he has him as the top-ranked Ranger on the list, and #37 overall, and makes mention of his “elite defense.” Immediately behind Leody are Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh and Brendon Rodgers, which gives you an idea of how highly Law thinks of Leody.
The other Ranger to make the list is Josh Jung, the third baseman out of Texas Tech who was the #8 overall pick in the 2019 draft by the Rangers. Law notes that Jung’s ceiling is “really a function of his power,” with differing opinions on whether Jung, who was a contact, line-drive type guy in college, will be able to tap into enough of his raw power to be an above-average regular at third base.
