The Texas Rangers released 37 minor leaguers today, with 2015 second rounder Eric Jenkins and fifth rounder Chad Smith among the more significant names. Scott Lucas has the full rundown of the players that you can check out here.
Jenkins got a $2 million over-slot signing bonus in 2015 as a toolsy high school outfielder that the Rangers were higher on than many other teams. Jenkins was fast and impressive in the outfield defensively, but he never hit at all, or got out of A ball. Smith, similarly, was a toolsy high school outfielder who never developed.
Also being cut loose are former major league pitchers Austin Bibens-Dirkx, Brandon Mann and Nick Gardewine. Mann and ABD were minor league lifers who were brought up out of necessity and made good stories, but Gardewine was a legitimate prospect who flashed some potential before injuries de-railed him.
