In the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft the Texas Rangers selected Pensacola, Florida, high school pitcher Tekoah “T.K.” Roby.
While the second rounder was someone no one had projected as a second rounder, Roby is ranked 155 on the Baseball America top 500 list, and said he’s a potential third or fourth rounder.
The righthanded Roby isn’t real big — he is listed at 6’1”, 180 lbs. — but he has three solid pitches, with a high spin rate fastball and a potential plus curveball. BA said he was trending up when the season was canceled.
We know the Rangers gravitate towards the high spin rate pitchers, and so this pick fits with what they look for. This is a relatively uncontroversial pick, though Roby wouldn’t seem to be someone who would go materially overslot, so there still seems to be unused pool money out there.
