With the 2020 MLB draft just over a week away, Keith Law’s latest mock draft is out, and he has the Texas Rangers going high risk, high reward with their choice at #14.
Keith projects the Rangers selecting Pennsylvania high school righthanded pitcher Nick Bitsko in the first round. We wrote up Bitsko in mid-May — he’s a big, projectable righthander who throws hard, has a high spin rate, and doesn’t turn 18 until July. He also re-classified to be eligible for the 2020 draft — he was previously expected to be a 2021 draftee, so he has been seen less by scouts than most well regarded high school seniors, even given the cancellation of spring seasons.
Keith says the rumor is the Rangers are one of the few teams apparently willing to go high-risk, high-reward this year — a year where most teams are expected to be even more conservative, and college-oriented, than usual in their picks. If so, Bitsko would definitely fit the bill.
