Latest Baseball America mock draft has Rangers surprise

BA’s latest mock draft has the Rangers taking a college hitter we haven’t talked about at #14

Baseball America has their latest mock draft out today, and the project the Texas Rangers taking University of North Carolina first baseman Aaron Sabato at #14.

This is surprising — I have not seen anything about Sabato and the Rangers before now, and BA notes that 14 is higher than he’s appeared on previous mock drafts. Sabato is a righthanded hitting draft-eligible sophomore who hits for power and draws walks, slashing .332/.459/.698 in 368 plate appearances in his freshman and in his abbreviated sophomore campaign.

Guys who are only first basemen generally don’t go in the first round unless they really mash, but Sabato apparently has raw power that is arguably the best in this year’s draft class. With his patience and power, just having an average hit tool would make Sabato a productive player, even as a first baseman.
